SATELLITE BEACH - Florida Fish and Wildlife biologists have rescued the second of two sick manatees from a canal where up to 100 of the sea cows have gathered for warmth during the cold snap.
The sick manatee was taken away by a SeaWorld team, who said they will nurse it back to health and later release it back into the wild.
Workers had dreged the same canal days earlier, when the manatees got stuck in shallow water and could not get out.
One of the sick manatees was brought in over the weekend. The other arrived late Tuesday afternoon after officials said it was suffering from hypothermia.
Biologists said the manatee has lost a lot of weight and was trying to feed, but there was not enough food in the canal.
The manatees have been gathering in the 76 degree waters of the tiny canal for nearly two weeks, trying to get away from the dangerously chilly waters of the Indian River.
Manatees must stay in water 68 degrees or warmer to survive.
