Every little girl that I know wants to be Cinderella. Every little girl that I know would probably give her barbie collection to see any of the Disney Princesses in person. Most people can name the whole Disney princess line-up. Although the famous eight were chosen in 2000 specifically for a marketing franchise, most of them were known as the cornerstones of Disney long before.
Cinderella
What you don't know her: The Disney version of the character was based on the French version of the tale by Charles Perrault in Histoires ou Contes du Temps Passé.
Snow White
What you don't know about her: Walt Disney had difficulty finding a suitable voice for Snow White. A casting director for Disney phoned a well-known voice coach named Guido Caselotti, to help him. Overhearing the conversation, Caselotti's daughter Adriana got on the phone and sang and spoke in a young girl's voice. Embarrassed, Guido ordered his daughter to get off the phone, but the casting director had already invited her to audition. After Walt heard her, he cast her immediately.
Princess aurora
What you don't know about her: The original character design of Aurora was done by Tom Oreb, who modeled the princess after the elegant, slender features of actress Audrey Hepburn.
Ariel
What you don't know about her: A challenge in animating Ariel was the color required to show Ariel in the changing environments, both under the sea and on land, for which the animators required thirty-two color models, not including costume changes. The blue-green color of Ariel's fin was arguably a hue specially mixed by the Disney paint lab; the color was named "Ariel" after the character.
Belle
What you don't know about her: In 2002, Beauty and the Beast was added to the United States National Film Registry as being deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."
Jasmine
What you don't know about her: she is the first princess not of European descent.
Pochahontas
What you don't know about her: Though Pocahontas does not have the characteristics of a traditional princess such as Cinderella (who married a prince), she is still included as a Disney Princess because she is the daughter of a Native American chief. This makes Pocahontas the first American Disney Princess.
Mulan
What you don't know about her: She is inspired by the legendary Hua Mulan from the Chinese poem The Ballad of Mulan
It has now been over ten years since Disney has chosen a new princess. Not that they have had much to choose from. The new trend in Hollywood has been digital animation, which is a huge change visually from the hand-drawn technique used to create the original princess movies. Even still, many of the movies in these past ten years have featured animals, not humans, and not even royal animals if we want to continue the dissection.
But Disney has finally picked up the slack and has announced not one, but two additions to the Princess franchise.
Princess Tiana
She hails from the upcoming Princess and the Frog movie and her arrival marks disney's return to hand drawn animation. She will also be the first African American princess in the Disney Princess franchise.
Rapunzel
Surprisingly she comes from a CGI movie due out in 2010 and the movie will be the 50th animated feature produced by the Studio. It has been revealed that even though the film is CGI it will be made to look like a 3-D version of a hand drawn film.
