Spidermand 4 has been canceled and replaced with Spiderman Reboot. Sony wants a more gritty, contemporary redo of the series, and are focused on younger, up-and-coming directors. Possible director picks include Marc Webb, Micheal Bay, and Gary Ross. The Spiderman Reboot series will place Peter Parker in a more contemporary setting, as a teenager battling today's issues.
Even though Spiderman Reboot is a huge surprise to fans, it is a pre-planned move. Originally it was supposed to be a 2012 project. Sam Raimi said he could not complete Spiderman 4 by the deadline Sony had given him and Sony decided to can the project altogether and focus on Reboot instead.
How does this affect the new Disney Marvel merger? Sony must continue to actively develop the Spider-Man franchise or else the rights revert back to Disney/Marvel. So for now, Sony keeps the rights.
Spiderman Reboot is now in preproduction and the script has already been written by James Vanderbilt. Toby Magwire the rest of the Spiderman cast have been fired and the announcement of the new director and star are expected in the coming weeks.
