Disney Keychest Technology Revealed

Keychest will enable customers to buy films or television shows from various distributors, store them on remote servers, and play them on multiple platforms ranging from TVs, computers, portable DVD players, and phones.
Disney Keychest will be available on the U.S. and international markets. Partners will be announced soon but you can bet that Apple will be one of the first announced. Disney and Apple have already gone public about future plans to team up to offer subscription tv which is not a far stretch from what Keychest will do. Other partners will include content distributors, cable companies, and telecommunications services.
The idea is to make it easier for consumers to access and view their movies and tv shows from anywhere they want without worrying about the content taking up too much space, compatibility, or even formatting.
The actual Keychest technology will not be operated by Disney, they will be outsourcing a third party. Company officials expect other studios to use Keychest to distribute content as well.
"The idea is to have all the movies consumers want to buy available in this way...If it's Disney only, there really isn't much value here"
- Kelly Summers, vice president of digital distribution at Disney
Keychest is Disney's answer to falling DVD and Blu-ray sales. It will not be a device like Tivo or an Apple TV. Keychest will most likely be a program that retailers can tap into to verify that consumers have already purchased the right to access a movie, and then make that movie available to the consumer across different devices. The consumer would just need to have that program installed on all of the devices they plan to watch content on (phone, tv, computer, etc.)
Disney hopes the technology will be available before the end of 2010.
