Disney's Twin Town is Swindon

Swindon, 80 miles west of London with a population of 180,000, has beat 100's of other entries, and twenty-four other finalist towns in England to win the title of Walt Disney World's Twin Town!Rebecca Warren, nominated her town with a video and a poem, she and two guests will fly to the Walt Disney theme park for a special ceremony where they will unveil a special plaque honoring Swindon. The Swindon mayor has also been invited to the ceremony. The plaque will read "Walt Disney World twinned with Swindon", and Swindon's town square will receive one also. Epcot will also feature a special Swindon exhibit next year.
It was her video submission that really seems to be what made judges give Swindon the honor of being Disney World's sister town. Hugh Wood, one of the judges said:
"What was particularly fun about her submission was that she really took some time and effort over it...She understood our brand, and she drew some quirky and fun parallels between the magic of Swindon and the magic of Disney World in Orlando."
A Disney spokesperson also was quoted saying-
"We will liaise with Swindon officials and together define a plan to help the community through the whole of 2010."
The practice of twinning towns began in Europe after the Second World War, as a way of bringing countries closer together and promoting an understanding of each other's cultures. Such a lovely gesture from Disney.
