New Disney Hand Drawn Animated Movie: The Snow Queen

With the success of Princess and the Frog, it is being reported that Disney now wants to try and release a new hand-drawn animated movie every two years. So what is to come after Princess and the Frog?

Producer Peter Del Vecho says:

"So right after The Princess and the Frog, the crew actually first goes onto Winnie the Pooh... After that, the next full-length feature is Snow Queen. Our [animators] are looking forward to getting started on that. And then of course Ron [Clements] and John [Musker] have another project coming up which they've asked me to produce, and we'll go into development on that one pretty much next spring."

It is also being reported that Alen Menken, who did the music for The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast, will be working the music for The Snow Queen.

The Snow Queen is an old Disney project that had several dead ends in the past, but now the film is progressing. The original Snow Queen is a fairy tale by author Hans Christian Andersen about the struggle between good and evil as experienced by a little boy (Kai) and girl (Gerda), which is what the Disney movie is assumed to be based off of.

You may think that the concept art for our Queen may look a little dark - in an interview from 2008 animator Harald Siepermann had an explanation:

"I worked together with Dick Zondag on The Snow Queen. I've known him since Balto, actually, which we did for Steven Spielberg animation. When the time came for The Snow Queen, they gave me call and then I did some first design based on a young Meryl Streep kind of character. Unluckily, the project was canceled because Disney didn't want to go into fairytales anymore at that time. They said that they wanted something wise, witty and more modern, because at that time, you know, everybody said that the Disney formula was dead and nobody wanted to see princesses and stuff like that. So, that project was canceled, sadly. But I spent a couple of weeks on some Queens, trying different levels of caricature on her, some more cartoony, others less."
