Disney is letting Tim Burton Do What?

Is Disney taking a risk on a Tim Burton movie in hopes of cashing in on the fact that everything he creates is almost sure to turn into a cult classic with endless merchandise opportunities?

Alice in Wonderland is right up there with Snow White on my list of favorite movies. Tim Burton is probably one of my favorite film makers of all time. That being said, I have no doubt he will make a masterpiece out of our dear Alice, I'm just very surprised that Disney was willing to let him.

The reason I am surprised is not just because of the reputation behind Mr. Burton, it is because Disney has fired him from projects in the past.  Frankenweenie was a 1984 short film that he directed and was fired by Disney after the film was completed; the studio claimed that he had wasted company resources and felt the film was too scary for young audiences. The film was not released until 1994 after Burton had other box office success, and even then it was only released on home movie.

Burton had this to say about the upcoming movie:

"it's kind of a mixture of some distorted live action and animation. I can't relate it to anything because I'm not sure what to relate it to. It's kind of new territory for me..."

"New territory" I'm sure means that he's trying to be on his best behavior for Disney so he can make his own version of a story that almost every artist has been drawing inspiration out of since they first saw the movie or read the books. It must be a dream come true for him to work on this as well as a huge treat for any of his fans.

The movie is to be released on March 10th 2010, almost a full year later than was originally planned due to scheduling conflicts of the set pieces. Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland will feature all of the latest technology in movie making including 3D technology, motion capture, and stop motion. All combined they promise to give the most surreal experience to be had from any live action movie. Some of the Alice in Wonderland 2010 plot has been revealed but be aware that it has some plot spoilage. Just so you know, it may not be what you expect.

I for one can barely wait and have been scouring the internet for anything I can find on the project and have come to see that the best part of this movie is going to be how closely the new movie mimics the style of the old.

I will give it the benefit of the doubt. You have to remember though, is Burton looking towards the Disney movie as a point of reference or the original novels? Too many times remakes are either bashed because they disregard the source material or they get bashed because they disregard what people consider the "most accepted" version. Roald Dahl hated the Gene Wilder version of his work but people looked at Burton funny for making a movie more close to Dahl's original story.

I would say that since it will be a Disney movie the film will be firmly rooted in the original Disney animation. I'm fine with that though. I love that one as much as I loved the books, and just as much as I love the live action version that came out in the 80's (I think that's when it came out anyway.)

Even if Disney is embracing the dark side with a new spooky production company you have to wonder how much "off with her head" and baby clam stealing/eating walruses they are willing to deal with? I do wonder if since they brought the Red Queen from Through the Looking Glass will we see the Jabberwocky?

Anyway I think the movie success will being heavily reliant on (a)Johnny Depp (b)Tim Burton and his Nightmare Before Christmas success and (c) people who loved the animated Alice coming back for more. It's a built in audience.

Well I think this movie will be truly enchanting, the old disney version was cute, and I mean just cute! The burton one however, is a complete sucsess hopefully me and my younger sister will go and enjoy the movie. It is also following the book, it has a dark side to it, just the way Lewis Caroll wrote it. The pictures always used to scare me, my sister and even my mother when she was young but that's why we love it.

The thing that I am exicted about is that it's a sequel! That means supprises and I won't end up getting bored like Charlie and and the Chocolate factory. Although I am a bit dissapointed that it Alice will be 19 , they could at least have made her 15 but who am I to judge when it I haven't even watched it?!

This movie is actually based on the sequal to Alice in Wonderland. This movie is based off of Through the Looking Glass, and What Alice found there. I still am very excited to see this movie though. It is one of my favorite disney movies as well as children books.

Actually, the movie is a sequel when Alice is nineteen and returns to Wonderland to fight the red queen. Underland (apparently she misheard when she was little, because the world is under-the-land) is a combination of Carrol's Wonderland and Looking Glass world. They've got the red queen and white queen and the tweedles from looking glass world and then the mad hatter and march hare and white rabbit from Wonderland. I can't wait to see it, Burton is awesome and this looks absolutely insane!
