We are saddened to share that Taima, a 20-year-old killer whale at
SeaWorld Orlando, died this week from complications associated with the birthing process.
"We are very saddened by this loss," said Dr. Chris Dold, vice president of veterinary services for SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment. "Although we understand that complications with pregnancy can occur here, just as they do in the wild, the loss of any animal affects all of us at SeaWorld."
Taima had successfully given birth to three calves previously. Preliminary indications suggest that her death was caused by a condition in which the placenta is delivered before the fetus, as well as an unusual position of the fetus in the birthing canal. She was not able to deliver the stillborn fetus naturally; SeaWorld's veterinarians attempted to assist, but her complications were too severe.
A definitive cause of death will not be known until a necropsy is completed. The comprehensive medical process will be carried out by SeaWorld veterinarians and pathologists, and may take up to six weeks to complete.

Two killer whales at SeaWorld Orlando are pregnant, with one due in a matter of weeks.
SeaWorld says it expects Taima, a 20-year-old orca, will give birth to her fourth calf later this month or in early June. And it says Katina, a 32-year-old orca, is expected to have her seventh calf in late October.
The father in both pregnancies is Tilikum, the 12,000-pound male orca who in February drowned a SeaWorld killer-whale trainer in a violent episode in front of park guests.
Should the births be successful, they would push the number of orcas at SeaWorld Orlando to 10. Orlando-based SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment, which also operates parks in California and Texas, says it has had 26 successful killer-whale births in company history, beginning with Katina's first calf in 1985.

State wildlife officials have released three manatees back into the water.
A pregnant manatee was released Tuesday morning, along with another female manatee and her calf.
According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the mother and calf were rescued in January from an Indian River County canal. They were taken to SeaWorld in Orlando and treated for cold stress.

Following the tragic death of Dawn Brancheau, a trainer at
SeaWorld Orlando who was pulled under water and drown by SeaWorlds largest killer whale, Tilikum, the park suspended the Believe shows at all of their parks. The shows resumed on Feb. 27, 2010 without any trainers being allowed to enter the water with the killer whales. The show began with a tribute to Dawn.

Show's involving killer whales resume today at all
SeaWorld Parks. Trainers won't be allowed in the water, meaning the spectacular stunts, like when the handlers surf on top of the whales or are thrown into the air, won't be done. And a video tribute is planned for Dawn Brancheau, the 40-year-old veteran trainer who was rubbing the 12,000-pound giant when he grabbed her ponytail and pulled her in.
Protesters who think the killer whales should be released into the wild planned to demonstrate outside the park, where red balloons and flowers have been left in memory of Brancheau.
SeaWorld Parks and Entertainment President Jim Atchison said Friday trainers won't swim with the killer whales until officials finish reviewing what happened to Brancheau.

12,000-pound killer whale Tilikum pulled one of its trainers, Dawn Brancheau, into it's tank on February 24, 2010 at SeaWorld Orlando. SeaWorld President and Chief Executive Officer, Jim Atchison, made the following statement about her drowning:
"It is with great sadness that I report that one of our most experienced animal trainers drowned in an incident with one of our killer whales this afternoon, February 24, 2010 at our SeaWorld Orlando park.
We have initiated an investigation to determine, to the extent possible, what occurred. There are no other details to share at this point, but we will make our findings known in due course.
I must emphasize that this is an extraordinarily difficult time for the SeaWorld parks, and our team members.
Nothing is more important than the safety of our employees, guests and the animals entrusted to our care. All of our standard operating procedures will come under review as part of the investigation.
We extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of the trainer and will do everything possible to assist them in this difficult time.
We appreciate everyone's understanding and will share more information as it becomes known and available."
SeaWorld parks around the nation have suspended their Believe shows and Dine with Shamu experience with no word on future dates.
