Halloween Horror Nights 2011 at Universal Orlando Event Review

First Hand Review of Halloween Horror Nights 2011 at Universal Studios Orlando

Halloween Horror Nights Universal Orlando 2011

Depending on the year you go, houses at HHN can be hit-and-miss. Some years they have 10 houses, but only 3 are any good; some years there are only 6 houses, but each one will scare you half to death. This year, however, throws all that out the window. HHN 2011 provides 8 houses and only one that I have anything to gripe about. My personal favorites have to be The In Between (a “3D” house), Nightingales (set in the middle of WWI), and Nevermore (a nod to Edgar Allen Poe).

To avoid spoiling the In Between too much I’ll just say that it’s the scariest of all. Check it out—end of story.

Nightingales puts you in the trenches of a battle in WWI battle where, ironically enough, the nurses are bloodthirsty predators and (surprise!) you’re the prey. What I like about Nightingales is that it makes sense for your path to be narrow and rugged; it’s a trench in a WWI battle! It’s a very clever way to incorporate reality into the fantasy.

Last but not least on my must-see house list is Nevermore. As the name’s connotation implies, this house is themed around the brilliant literary works of Edgar Allen Poe. The house entrance is plastered with a collage of these works which, when viewed at a distance, form a portrait of Poe. The entrance of this house acts as a portal that thrusts you straight into a collection of Poe’s best-known stories. The rumor goes that they’ve been working on the Nevermore house for two years; the level of detail in the house seems to back that rumor up. Everything from The Raven, to The Tell-tale Heart, to The Pit and the Pendulum can be spotted throughout the house—each presented in their own style to truly exhibit the madness of Poe.

With as pleasantly horrifying as these houses are, I still have a couple small complaints this year. There are two houses that just seem empty. Saws n’ Steam and Winter’s Night aren’t bad ideas and they aren’t poorly executed houses; they just lack they detail and attention that it seems the other houses received. Check these houses out if you have time, but if you’re in a rush these are the two that you would want to pass on.

Scare Zones:

The scare zones have never failed to impress me and this year is no exception. HHN 2011 generously provides six scare zones to ensure you stay pumped not just in the houses, but while roaming the park between houses as well. Nightmaze takes first place as best scare zone for one reason in particular: innovation. The name is pretty self-explanatory. You’re walking through a very dark, very scary maze. Unlike a typical maze though, the walls in this maze shift all around. The effect is that you feel lost, confused, and vulnerable (it actually impressed me how vulnerable they made me feel—I had no idea where my next scare would come from). The maze walls may trap you in a small room for a few seconds or guide you back to where you started, and all the while there’s a scare behind each turn. The other scare zones were cool to be sure, but nothing stood out the same way that this one did.

While some things this year stood out, one tradition was completely abandoned: The Rocky Horror Picture Show did not return this year and I, for one, am seriously upset about this. On top of that, Bill and Ted even seemed a little lack-luster this year. It wasn’t bad, and I chuckled at a few good moments but overall it left me wishing for a little more kick. In the greatest contrast, Death Drums was quite a lively experience. The drummers were talented and impressive, the beats hit hard, and the zombie dancers topped the show off just a hint of over-the-top comedy. My final verdict on the shows is this: Death Drums is easy enough to catch between houses and you won’t regret doing so. As far as Bill and Ted is concerned, if you have the time for it you’ll enjoy it, but it’s nothing to bend backwards over.

Halloween Horror Nights 2011 Worth the Trip?

I was utterly terrified that Halloween Horror Nights 2011 wouldn’t scare me at all, especially with the calamity they tried to skate by with last year. These fears proved to be ridiculous and unneeded. Halloween Horror Nights was terrific in spite of—or perhaps because of—last year’s event and I had a blast. I would definitely recommend going this year, but here is the most important part: The prices aren’t to die for (unless you book through us) and the park, though haunted, is no ghost town. Grab tickets for any night Sunday through Thursday—they’re cheaper and the park is much less crowded.

Halloween Horror Nights Gets Early Reveal Thanks to Burger King

Halloween Horror Nights Spoiler from Burger King

Earlier this month AAA accidently posted a full house list for Howl-o-Scream at Busch Gardens, and it looks like Burger King may have revealed the Halloween Horror Nights 2011 Icon a week early. No word yet if it was an accident or a scheduled release. All fingers still point to Lady Luck as 2011 Halloween Horror Nights Orlando Icon.

It don't hurt to point out that Universal Studios did promise on their Halloween Horror Nights 2011 Twitter page that they would try to "misdirect" eager fans. Since the release of the poster Universal has responded with:

To those of you who think you have seen the face of HHN 21: You haven't seen anything yet."

Disappointment for Disney World at D23 Expo 2011

No News for Disney World Florida at D23 2011

The D23 Expo started yesterday and everyone had high hopes for some big announcements like the Fantasyland Expansion reveal at the D23 Expo in 2009. Though there was some big news for Disney Shanghai, decent announcements for Disneyland in California, and lots of plugs for Aulani Resort – Disney World news was all about updates on how the Fantasyland Expansion at Magic Kingdom was going, and relatively short news at that. Although we did get to see some pretty amazing videos of the ride technology that will be coming and a Fantasyland “fly through”.

Seven Dwarfs Mine Train Coaster

This ride coming to Fantasyland will be based on the Seven Dwarfs and their diamond mine. The ride technology looks pretty amazing.

Magic Kingdom Fantasyland Expansion Model

Looks like Disney plans to do a lot of changes to the land in this section of the park – trees, streams, hills, and rocks are all going to be added in.

Even if we aren’t getting any new announcements this year, all things considered, we are getting an amazing expansion that will hopefully be completed on time…2012.

Spoiler Alert: Halloween Horror Nights 2011 Possible House List

Halloween Horror Night 2011 Speculated House List

Universal Studios Orlando is hosting their 21st Halloween Horror Nights event this year. It has been tougher than ever to decipher clues about this year’s theme and houses due to a massive social media campaign from Halloween Horror Nights. Instead of all of the clues being found on their home page, Halloween Horror Nights has been tweeting, facebooking, and mailing fans all sorts of disjointed clues. We have been wading through all of the updates for you. Full list of possible houses are below. This is all speculation until Universal Studios does the full Halloween Horror Nights 2011 reveal.

Eight Halloween Horror Nights 2011 Houses listed in no particular order.

  • Graveyard/Crypt – Probably our icon house with Lady Elizabeth Hawthorn who lived – and died in the 1800’s
  • World War I type warzone hospital with life sucking nurses
  • Saws n Steam Utopian House
  • Pirate House possibly based on the 4th ship of Christopher Columbus or the 4th voyage
  • Literary House – Possibly Edgar Allen Poe
  • Occult/demon house
  • Humor house based on campy horror TV - more than likely a television studio
  • The Thing

Should have confirmation on these houses on September 1st.

Disney Vinylmation Unboxing - and Contest!

Disney Vinlymation Unboxing Pictorial and Free Vinylmation Contest

After waiting for two weeks, my Disney Vinylmation order finally made it in!

What is Disney Vinylmation?

A collectible toy that comes in 1.5 inches, 3 inches, or 9 inches. Most Vinlymation are sold in a "blind box" where you don't know what you are getting until opened, though others are sold in "window boxes" that show you exactly what Vinylmation you are receiving.

What if I don't like mine?

As with Disney pins, Vinylmation is designed to be traded. All Disney Parks and some Disney stores will allow you to trade in your toy for a choice of another. See a great video from Disney Parks detailing the process.

So after hearing about these things for so long, I decided to try them for myself. I'm no good with surprises, so I picked up a window box of one I knew I would like, a limited release by Funko that I loved, and a blind box. I also picked up two boxes to give away! Contest details will be at the bottom of this post.

My boxes were ordered and delivered separately, and it was torture not opening the contest boxes, luckily they arrived only a day apart.

First up - Marie from the Bakery Series. Her frosting head is removable. This one ended up being my favorite of the bunch.

Next up was my Snow White Vinylmation by Funko. I fully expected to love this one the most, but I didn't.

disney vinylmation funk snow white

Sure, it's cute, but the first thing I noticed when I pulled it out of the box were all of the scratches and sloppy paint.

Finally I had my blind box, which I surprisingly loved. Once you open the cardboard box, your Vinylmation is is a foiled bag that has your figurine with a collectors card.

Each Vinylmation toy comes with a stamped signature on the feet along with which series it is from.

disney vinylmation collectibles

Overall I really liked these, enough so to want to start collecting some of the cute sets (as you can see, give me pink and I am happy) Although, since I am right by Disney World, I will be going there for my purchases. Unless you are doing second day shipping, expect to wait a very long time for your Disney Store orders. These shipped over a week after paying for them.

Begining Monday August 8th 2011 Vacation Paradise will be hosting a week long contest exclusively though Facebook and Twitter for a chance to win one of two brand new, unopened Disney Vinylmations. We are giving away one Cutesters Too and one Robots.

Halloween Horror Nights Orlando 2011 Sneak Peek

Universal Orlando Begins Reveal for Halloween Horror Nights 2011

Universal Studios Orlando has created a new twitter account just for Halloween Horror Nights 21 (@UORHHN) and posted a new photo.

"For 25 nights at Universal Orlando's HHN 21 screams will fill the air, her's a sneak peek at why..."

Halloween Horror Nights 2011 Orlando Sneak Peek - new house

The image looks very much like last years icon and his minions. Will Fear make a return for 2011? One of Universal Halloween Horror Nights Orlando's first tweets did promise to either direct - or misdirect fans. Only time will tell what 2011 Halloween Horror Nights Orlando will bring.

Halloween Horror Nights 2011 Icon - Lady Luck Scary Enough?

Universal's Halloween Horror Nights 2011 in Orlando, Florida may have another original icon

Halloween Horror Nights 2011 at Universal Studios Orlando, Florida is claiming that nobody beats the house, and year 21 of HHN will be the scariest yet…but how afraid of Lady Luck are you?

No official icon has been announced yet, but Universal has been dropping taglines on the official Halloween Horror Nights Website and Press release such as “Be careful what you wager”, “To wait for luck is the same as waiting for death”, “Are you waiting for luck”, “Luck will run out”. The website sports a full gambling theme with imagery of a severed had holding playing cards. Lady Luck, or another seductive lady (maybe Jack’s girlfriend Chance?) as a Halloween Horror Nights Icon seems like a no brainer. Though Universal Studios can always be counted on for surprises.

Halloween Horror Nights 2011 Orlando Theme

Halloween Horror Nights returns to Universal Studios Florida September 23rd and continues on select nights through October 31st 2011.

Official Halloween Horror Nights Orlando Dates and Times:

Confirmed houses:

The Thing: Assimilation

HHN 21 Thing House 2011 Halloween Horror Nights

An abandoned scientific research facility in the midst of a vast and frozen Antarctica will set the stage for "The Thing," an all-new haunted house inspired by Universal Pictures' upcoming thriller, at Universal Orlando Resort's Halloween Horror Nights 21.  In the thriller "The Thing," paranoia spreads like an epidemic among a group of researchers as they're infected, one by one, by a mystery from another planet.

The new haunted house will offer guests an unprecedented first-hand preview of the much-anticipated thriller in advance of its October 14 release. Guests will find themselves in a series of face-to-face encounters with "The Thing," an alien creature that can transform itself into an exact replica of any living being. "The Thing" haunted house will recreate the spine-chilling suspense from the film, confronting guests with the paranoia and fear that comes from being trapped inside the film's Antarctic Thule station. The shape-shifting alien could be anywhere or anything.  Will they survive?

Eerily authentic, "The Thing" haunted house will feature elaborately designed and disturbingly real alien creatures and sets. They will match the film's terrifying intensity and provoke both a memorable and disturbing experience. Universal Orlando has partnered with the film's producers, Strike Entertainment's Marc Abraham and Eric Newman (Dawn of the Dead) to create an experience that is authentic to the film. The sets, audio, musical score, creature and character references are all based on the film. Universal Studios Hollywood's Halloween Horror Nights event will also offer a haunted house based on the thriller.

Confirmed Ghost Hunters Appearance: Steve & Tango on October 6th 2011

Coming houses: Based on permits for building, it looks like there may be 8 houses and 6 scarezones for the 2011 Halloween Horror Nights event, unconfirmed.

Universal Studios Orlando Halloween Horror Nights Construction Locations

  • Jaws Queue
  • Disaster Queue – possible bloody Christmas tree spotted
  • Pop-up Tent Houses stationed behind Simpsons/MIB

Casting speculation:

  • Universal was very interested in those who spoke fluent Spanish for scaractor auditions.
  • Though casting at for Halloween Horror Nights is done with codenames, it seems that we can expect some sort of woodland area, hospital/psych ward, and prison.
See HHNRumors for full casting list.
